Mick Hutchings
Mick Hutchings lives and works in the Medway Towns. He did his foundation at Maidstone College of Art in 1985 and studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths 1986 – 1990 and had the influential lecturers Basil Beattie and Elma Thubron as tutors. He was in the year between Gary Hume, Ian Davenport and Damien Hirst, a febrile and pivotal time in art education.
During this time he worked as an artist technician working on a number of large projects with the artist Michael Kenny. He then worked for several years as a lecturer at Maidstone College of Art and now concentrates on his studio practise full time.
In recent years Mick has shown with Beers London Gallery, The Well Hung Gallery, The Terrace Gallery, Halpern Gallery, Twenty Twenty Gallery and The Horsebridge Arts Centre. He has work in numerous private collections in the UK, Europe, Australia and the US.
Mick’s work grows out of a response to what surrounds him in everyday life. The surrounding landscape, his garden, studio and the simple objects found in the home all form part of his subject matter. This is true however removed the subject eventually becomes from the final piece. Collage is central to his creative process, its simplicity and its potential to be such a rich language. Colour being a constant joy and surprise its discordant qualities just as much as its harmonies.
Making for him is a mixture of trial and error which when it works allows the unexpected to happen, collage nearly always playing a central role in this. Striving to maintain a playfulness underlies the whole creative endeavour. The end product being an independent object that takes on a life and character all of its own.
