Thomas Hawes

Thomas is an artist and graphic designer living and working in London. He studied Illustration at Norfolk Institute of Art and Design, and has an MA in Communication Design from the Royal College of Art.

Creatively, Thomas spend half his life as a graphic designer, designing advertising campaigns, branding, books and reports, and the other half in his studio making paintings.

He draws inspiration from an array of pre-loved objects Ihe's gathered over the years - ceramics, bottles, children’s toys, and ephemera. Each item, of little value, bears curious and often unknown stories. Through an experimental exploration of diverse mediums and techniques used to depict these unassuming artefacts, he embraces the unexpected and liberates himself from control, allowing chance and mistakes to guide his artistic path. Thomas wants to transport the viewers into a realm of ambiguity, guesswork, reflection and meditation; to engage actively with his paintings, hoping they’ll find moments of resonance and their own personal connection. Ordinary objects become extraordinary, as they offer glimpses into the depths of one’s personal memories and emotions.
